“Although M. Johnston strictly belongs to the Department of Chief Superintendent of Trade, yet his departure causes a vacancy in the Legislative and Executive Council of Hong Kong!”
Extract of a Despatch from Sir Henry Pottinger to Lord Stanley dated 13th Nov. 1843.
On the 21st of August I issued a Proclamation, of which I forward a copy, appointing Messrs: Johnston, and Morrison, and Major Caine to be Members of the Legislative and Executive Councils of Hong Kong.
